Patriotic fervour marks I-Day celebrations

Patriotic fervour, ceremony and colour marked the Independence Day celebrations in the city. Amidst much fanfare and festivity, District Collector T.Soundiah hoisted the Tricolour at the Anna Stadium on Sunday.

Overall 177 beneficiaries received welfare assistance and loans totalling Rs.40 lakh sanctioned by various departments and agencies. Mr.Soundiah distributed assistance worth Rs.27.70 lakh to 98 beneficiaries identified by the revenue department. He issued loans amounting to Rs.7.50 lakh sanctioned by the Tiruchi District Central Co-operative Bank.

The District Industries Centre released a loan of Rs.1 lakh each to two entrepreneurs.

The Collector gave away cheques to the tune of Rs.1.10 lakh under various schemes implemented by the Social Welfare department.

While the department for Welfare of Differently Abled sanctioned specially designed vehicles to a couple of persons, 17 beneficiaries received assistance worth Rs.41, 000 sanctioned by Backward Classes Welfare department.

Mr.Soundiah distributed appreciation certificates and Indira Vikas Patra for Rs. 500 each to six government employees and officials, in recognition of 25 years of service.

Earlier, accompanied by A.Kaliyamurthy, Superintendent of Police, the Collector inspected the guard of honour and took the salute at the impressive parade comprising Armed Reserve police personnel, Home Guards and NCC cadets.

He also honoured freedom fighters and NGOs on the occasion. School students from various schools in the district presented a cultural show with emphasis on national integration.

Gold coins presented

S.Sujatha, City Mayor hoisted the National Flag at the Corporation premises. She honoured 16 students, including wards of Corporation councillors and employees who secured high marks in the SSLC and Plus Two public examinations, with certificates and gold coins.

Later, she offered floral tributes at Gandhi Asthi Mandapam. T.T.Balasamy, Corporation Commissioner, S.Raja Mohamed, City Engineer, were among those present.

V.Raju, Principal General Manger, BSNL Tiruchi, hoisted the Tricolour at the BSNL office.

Dalmia Cements

Independence Day was celebrated at Dalmiapuram on Sunday. J.V.Gungune, executive director of Dalmia Cements who hoisted the national flag at the Dalmia higher secondary school grounds in Dalmiapuram, called upon the student community to learn from great leaders and saints.

Mr Gungune explained about the service rendered by the Dalmia Cements on the corporate social responsibility front and pointed out that livelihood training on computer operation was provided to 56 persons, tailoring training to 60 women of four villages around Dalmiapuram and distributed sewing machines to them.
