About 50,000 power consumers in the Tiruchirapalli City Corporation limits can look forward to quality power supply without voltage fluctuations as an upgraded substation at Thennur was commissioned by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa through video conference on Thursday.

The 33/11 kV substation at Thennur has been upgraded into a 110/33-11 kV by the Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Ltd., at a cost of Rs. 8.92 crore.

The substation will draw power from the Tiruchi-Thachankurichi corridor and transmission lines have been erected for a distance of about 9 km using extra height towers designed to meet the city requirement.

Till now, power was distributed to consumers from the 33/11 kV substation using two 8 MVA transformers through six 11 kV lines. With the commissioning of the upgraded substation, power supply would be done through two 16 MVA transformers through nine 11 kV power lines, officials of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation said.

“The upgrade will help in ensuring quality power supply free from voltage drops. This is the first 110/11 kV substation in Tiruchi city and it has been designed to take care of the anticipated power demand in the city corporation limits over the next five years,” said R. Kumaresan, Chief Engineer (Distribution), Tangedco.

Provisions have been made to supply power to 33/11 kV substations in future from the new upgraded power station.

Consumers in a large area within the Tiruchirapalli City Corporation limits, including those in Gandhi Market, Thillainagar, Rockfort, Palakkarai, Thennur, Woraiyur, Puthur, Big Bazaar Street, Annamalai Nagar and Anna Nagar areas, would benefit by the commissioning of the upgraded substation.

District Collector Jayashree Muralidharan, Government Chief Whip R. Manohar, Mayor A. Jaya, Mr. Kumaresan and other senior Tangedco officials were present during the commissioning of the Thennur substation.
