A fisherman from Pamban, who had gone to Saudi Arabia on contract fishing, has drowned when the boat in which he was fishing with others, collided with a vessel on Thursday morning, according to reports received by the fishermen leaders here.
The fisherman, identified as J. Braimic Ignatius (25), had gone to Saudi Arabia six months ago and was fishing with four other fishermen when the accident occurred, M. Patrick, former Pamban panchayat president, said.
After the collision, the fishermen jumped into the sea in a bid to escape.
While fishermen fishing in the vicinity resced four fishermen, Ignatius could have been drowned, he said.
The search went on till late in the evening and there was no report about his survival, Mr. Patrick said.
Ignatius was involved in deep sea fishing right from his young age and had been on contract fishing for the past several years.
After completing a two-year contract, he returned home six months ago, Mr Patrick said.
Plea to Centre
He urged the State government to take up the issue with the Centre and do the needful after alerting the Indian embassy officials in Riyadh.
