Palm oil spills from barge into sea

A barge transporting containers of palm oil from a cargo ship reportedly ran aground close to the shore causing spillage into the sea.

After getting the impact of the spillage washed ashore tested, the district administration assured that no harm would be caused to marine life.

The administration undertook remedial works to clear the spillage using earth movers. The operation was supervised by the Collector T. Munusamy, Captain Mansha, Port Officer of Maritime Board, Nagapattinam Port, V.Nalina, District Environmental Engineer, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and senior naval officials.

According to a press release, the barge ran aground at a distance of 100 m from the shore due to sudden wave movements, while being hauled by boats.
