Over 50 unauthorised structures removed

Over 50 unauthorised structures put up by shopkeepers, most of them extending to public spaces, were removed during an eviction drive taken up by the corporation at Central Bus Stand, Gandhi Market and other parts of the city on Friday.

Temporary structures put up by over 20 shopkeepers, to extend their business area, occupying space on the platforms and bus bays at Central Bus Stand were also removed during the drive under police protection.

Protest

The drive provoked a protest from the shopkeepers some of whom downed their shutters. Later, a group of traders also made a representation to the corporation authorities.

About 25 temporary structures put up by traders at the fruit market in Gandhi Market and opposite to the Vella Mandi were also evicted.

A few unauthorised shops near Tamil Nadu State Express Transport Corporation bus stand were removed.
