Organs of brain dead patient harvested

The liver, kidneys, and eyes of a brain dead patient were donated to needy patients after being harvested by a transplant and retrieval team of the Cethar Hospitals in the city. The patient, M.Balasundaram, aged 35, of Perumalpalayam near Thuraiyur, was admitted to the hospital with severe head injury and a CT scan revealed severe brain stem injury, for which he was treated by neuro physicians and surgeons. The patient was declared brain dead on Friday.

Consent given

The family was briefed about organ donation and with their consent the organs were harvested by the hospital doctors.

The liver was used for a patient with end-stage liver disease requiring cadaveric transplant at the hospital.

The kidneys were sent to Frontline Hospital, Tiruchi, while the eyes were sent to Joseph Eye Hospital, Karthick Sivakumar, Executive Director, Cethar Hospitals, said in a press release.
