Animal Husbandry Department in association with Uppiliyapuram panchayat union and village panchayats that formed part of the union, has chalked out plans to contain the spread of the foot-and-mouth disease. An emergency meeting of Uppiliyapuram panchayat union held recently discussed steps to create awareness and enforce the precautionary measures to prevent the cattle killer.
N. Periasamy, veterinary assistant surgeon, Uppiliyapuram, said the department is on high alert and is taking every possible step to arrest the spread. He explained the cause, method of transmission, clinical symptoms, first aid treatment in case of occurrence, and environmental hygienic procedures to be adopted.
The roadside and water-logging areas were disinfected with bleaching powder and farmers were instructed not to purchase animals from disease-infected areas. Wall posters explaining the precautions and the procedural adoptions are on display in the common places of all the villages of the block.
Discussions were arranged at panchayat level by the presidents with milk suppliers, cattle brokers, and butchers.
At the meeting, veterinarians explained the emergency situations prevailing about the FMD and urged the participants to immediately inform them if there are any ailing animals.
