Officials chalk out plans for Big Temple millennium celebrations

Development works and infrastructure improvements that are to be taken up in Thanjavur ahead of the 1000th year celebrations of the construction of the Big Temple were discussed at a meeting chaired by Tourism Secretary V.Irai Anbu here on Thursday.

Mr.Irai Anbu held discussions with officials regarding preparations for the millennium celebrations. Among the issues discussed were improvement to be taken up on the roads in Thanjavur, construction of sanitary complexes and developing parks. He also discussed about conducting street cultural programmes, historical exhibitions and seminars. Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi is scheduled to participate in the event.

Building pathways along the banks of Grand Anicut canal, moat and Manimandapam renovation, special pujas at the temple during the festival and books to be published on rare paintings of the temple were some of the other issues discussed. Mr.Irai Anbu inspected the sites for the various events to be held in the town.

T.S.Sridhar, Commissioner, Department of Archaeology, R.C.Mohandoss, Director, Tourism, M.S.Shanmugham, Collector, Daniel Premnath, Joint secretary, Tourism and culture department, K.A..Senthil Velan, Superintendent of Police, Thanjavur district, Shanthi, Regional Director, Municipal Administration, Babaji Rajah Bhonsle, senior prince of Thanjavur and hereditary trustee of Palace Devasthanam, Kavitha, Joint Commissioner, HR and CE, Saravanan, senior conservator, Archaeological Survey of India participated in the meeting.
