Official machinery ready to meet cyclone eventualities

The district administration has stepped up preparedness to meet eventualities caused by cyclone-induced rains here in the coasts. As part of administrative measures, Collector C. Munianathan has designated zonal officer for each of the eight taluks here in the district to monitor cyclone situation.

On Sunday, Mr.Munianathan inspected Tharangambadi, Pazhayar fishing harbour, Aakkur, and Sirkazhi.

He has directed the Public Works Department to dredge channels at the confluence of Nandalar and Uppanar rivers.

The following officers have been designated as zonal officers for the corresponding taluks. Revenue Divisional Officer, Nagapattinam for Nagapattinam; backward classes welfare officer for Keezhvelur; District Supply Officer for Vedaranyam; Assistant Commissioner Excise for Thirukuvalai; Revenue Divisional Officer for Mayiladuthurai; Special Deputy Collector (colour TV) for Kuthalam, Special Deputy Collector (Relief and Rehabilitation) for Tharangambadi and Special Deputy Collector (Social Security Schemes) for Sirkazhi have been officer-designates to monitor the situation.

All 29-cyclone relief centres are kept ready and over 1,55,000 sand bags have been available with the PWD . Schools will remain closed on Monday.

Signal No 3 remained hoisted for the third consecutive day on Sunday here at the Port Office.

Thanjavur and Tirvarur

Fishermen in the coastal areas of Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts have been advised not to venture into the sea on Sunday in view of the “Jal” cyclone, which is expected to cross the coast tonight between Nellore and Chennai. M.S.Shanmugham, Thanjavur Collector, said revenue, PWD and highways department officials have been alerted. There was no rain in Thanjavur district on Sunday. Thanjavur district has 48 km of coastline with 30 fishermen villages M. Chandrasekaran, Tiruvarur Collector, said fishermen in coastal areas such as Muthupettai have been advised to stay away from the sea.

Pudukottai

Fishermen of Jegadapattinam, Kottaipattinam, Meemisal and neighbouring coastal villages in the district did not venture into the sea . Fisheries Department officials and Coastal Security Group police kept a close watch to meet any emergency.
