An air-conditioned bus stop inaugurated at four road junction in Kumbakonam

The temple town of Kumbakonam has added to its infrastructure a modern facility. An air-conditioned bus stop with an ATM attached to it was opened on Saturday. R.Vaithilingam, Minister for Housing and Urban Development, inaugurated the facility at the four road junction near east police station. The AC bus shelter has been put up by City Union Bank Ltd at a cost of Rs. 18 lakh and it can accommodate 30 passengers at a time. The bank has installed its ATM attached to the stop.

Rathna Sekar, chairperson, Kumbakonam municipality, said that eight more air-conditioned bus stops had been planned for the town.

Balasubramanian, chairman of City Union Bank Ltd, and N. Kamakoti, managing director of the bank, said that a surveillance camera has been fitted to the bus stop and connected to the police station nearby. The bus stop will be closed in the night . “We are trying this modern facility with the hope that people will utilise it properly,” they said.

O. S. Manian, MP, inaugurated the ATM facility. K.Baskaran, Collector, inaugurated the issue of death and birth certificates by the municipality through computer.

S. Chandrasekaran, general manager, Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Ltd (Kumbakonam), said that 68 town buses are plying every day in Kumbakonam town and 350 mofussil buses are operated a day.

M.Rangasamy, MLA, Savithiri Gopal, chairperson, Thanjavur municipality, Amutharani Ravichandran, chairperson, Thanjavur district panchayat council, and S.Shanthi, regional director of municipal administration, participated.
