In the process of installing video conferencing facility in many of its classrooms

National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi (NIT-T) has taken a lead among NITs in implementing the virtual classroom project. Following the success of the pilot project, the NIT-T is in the process of installing video conferencing facility in many of its classrooms.

“The Academic Interface Cell is attracting professors from IITs, IISc and other leading institutions to take classes for our students,” S. Sunderrajan, NIT-T Director, said during the Institute Day celebration on Tuesday. The Industry Interface Cell was performing a similar task. “We are redesigning our academic curriculum and incorporating industry-oriented topics,” he said.

Research funding increased and the Ministry of Human Resource Development has sanctioned a centre of excellence in transport engineering. Several activities were being pursued under the world-bank funded technical education quality improvement project, he said.

The golden jubilee year will witness all-round campus development. “We will be setting up a Central Laboratory Complex.” Collaboration with Confederation of Indian Industries was on the anvil for organising seminars and conferences for industries, he said and added that a campus radio will be launched.

Delivering the Institute Day address, Rajaram Nityananda, Chairperson, Board of Governors, said the institute was undergoing a major transformation. There was tremendous scope for revamping the website for showcasing the institute's progress to the outside world. The electronic medium could be utilised in a creative way to further strengthen student-teacher bonding, he said. Prof. Rajaram launched software developed by a senior faculty member B. Venkataramani for recording the lectures of teachers in the intranet. Presenting his report, P. Asokan, Dean-Academics, said the institute has applied for NBA accreditation for all undergraduate programmes. The purpose was to meet and exceed norms and standards fixed by international institutions. The Virtual Class Room set up as part of National Knowledge Network (NKN) project provides high speed network connectivity between all the IITs, NITs, and defence and other research and development laboratories.
