The National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi (NIT-T) has designed a massive godown of one lakh tonnes capacity to be built by the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation at Kovilpaththu in Nagapattinam district.

Since the village was located in a coastal area, a special design for its structural stability was needed and hence the corporation had sought the assistance from the NIT-T, official sources told The Hindu . The godown would come up on an area of 60 acres of land identified by the Revenue Department and transferred to the corporation at an estimate of Rs. 114 crore. A number of soil tests had been conducted by the NIT-T experts and the work on construction would commence shortly, once the waters stagnant in the area following north-east monsoon receded.

Similarly, the storage at the Tiruvarur district would stabilise with one lakh tonnes at an estimate of Rs. 114 crore. While 60,000 tonnes would be built at Kovilur, another 40,000 tonnes would come up at Kudavasal.

Eight godowns would be built in Karur, Perambalur, Pudukottai, and Thanjavur districts next financial year with a capacity of 2,000 tonnes with an outlay of Rs. 2.65 crore at all places except in Pattukottai where the capacity would be 1,500 tonnes with an outlay of Rs. 1.95 crore. Godowns would be built one each at Aravakurichi and Kadavur in Karur district; Tirumayam, and Ponnamaravathy in Pudukottai district; Orathanadu, Sengipatti, and Pattukottai in Thanjavur district, and Padalur in Perambalur district.

All godowns would be built with financial assistance from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development.
