Thieves broke into the house of a Forest Department official at Somarasampet here and took away gold jewellery and cash.

The police said the burglary came light after Aruna Basu Sarcar, Additional Chief Conservator of Forests, who works in Chennai, returned home on Saturday evening. Her husband is a senior officer in the same department in Coimbatore. Ms. Aruna had left for Chennai to meet her daughter on May 2. The culprits had gained entry into the house after breaking the lock of the front grill gate and took away nine sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs. 20,000 cash from the cupboard.

The sources said the culprits came out of the house through the rear door, bolted it from outside, and then locked the front gate before leaving the spot. Finger print experts were summoned and a tracker dog was brought to the spot to track the route taken by the culprits. The Somarasampet police have registered a case.
