The newly laid road at Ariyamangalam in the city along the Tiruchi-Thanjavur national highway had to be dug up to plug leak from an underground drinking water mainline pipe.

Due to the leak, drinking water supply to Heavy Alloy Penetrator Factory (HAPF) township was cut off, much to the consternation of the residents. According to an official of HAPF, the leak has occurred for a second time during the course of the implementation of the four-lane project, due to the traffic density.

Regular users of the road wondered how the project concessionaire could ignore the presence of the main pipeline before black-topping. The provision for laying a new mainline ought to have been exercised first before laying the road, a motorist opined.

The closure of the nearly one kilometre stretch on one side of the road for carrying out the repair works caused traffic congestion along the route throughout the day. The “slip-shod execution of the project” has angered the public who are already annoyed over the time overruns the project has suffered, a teacher of an institution close-by said.
