Need for well-defined safety procedures

Continuous improvement in safety procedure and getting suggestions from end users was essential to improve occupational safety and health, said A. V. Krishnan, Executive Director, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchi.

Speaking at the valediction Occupational Safety and Health Awareness Month at the BHEL on Monday, Mr. Krishnan said BHEL, Tiruchi, had dedicated the month of April for promotion of occupational safety and health as the International Labour Organisation had decided that April 28 would be World Day for Safety and Health at Work to focus attention on prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally. Several awareness programmes on industrial safety, road safety, chemical safety, environmental management and occupational health were conducted during the month.

Mr. Krishnan reiterated the need for well-defined safety procedures and called for the involvement of all employees to make 2015 a zero-accident year.

B.Alagesan, Additional Director, Industrial Safety And Health, Tiruchi, said the theme for this year’s World Day For Safety and Health at Work, ‘Building a culture of prevention on occupational safety and health’ calls for sustained efforts by all towards the five point agenda of safety of self and others, knowledge, continuous awareness, proper training and personal protective equipment.

G. Jayaprakash, General Manager, SSTP, R. S. Deenadayalu, General Manager, Operations (Boiler Shops), and M.Jayakumaran, General Manager, Human Resources, BHEL, spoke.

A pattimandram was organised on the occasion with Kavidasan, Director (HR), Roots India Group, Coimbatore, being the moderator. Prizes were distributed to winners of various competitions held in connection with the observation.

K.Muthukumar, Deputy General Manager, Safety Management, and A.Durai, Member, Central Safety Council, spoke.
