Nedumaran bail plea rejected

The Judicial Magistrate Court II here on Thursday rejected the bail application of P. Nedumaran, president of Ulaga Tamizhar Peramaippu and 81 others who were arrested by the police on Wednesday.

Mr. Nedumaran and his supporters were arrested when they held protests following the demolition of a portion of the compound wall of the Mullivaikkal Memorial here by the police and highways officials. The arrested persons were kept in a community hall at Kallukulam till midnight.

The police have registered cases under section 147 (unlawful assembly) 148 (rioting armed with deadly weapons), 447 (trespass), 506 (II) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and under Tamil Nadu Public Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act.

At 1 a.m. Judicial Magistrate Moorthy came to the nearby St. Joseph's School and remanded 82 persons, including Mr. Nedumaran, to custody till November 27. One person who was found to be a minor was sent to Borstal School here.

Others were taken to Tiruchi Central Prison.
