Murder accused in Tiruchi escapes escort, caught by public

A murder case accused who escaped from police escort after pushing down a constable at the combined court complex here was caught moments later by public on Monday.

The incident took place in the afternoon when the accused, K.Backiaraj (28) and M.Sasikumar (29), were brought to the Principal District and Sessions Court for examination of witnesses.

The accused were arrested on the charge of murdering Muthumani alias Mariyayee (27) and fleeing away with her gold jewellery in Navalpat police station limit in February last year.

Before leaving the spot, the accused dumped the body in a drum.

The Navalpat police booked a murder for gain case on a complaint from the victim’s mother. Venmani, a woman constable, and Anthonysamy, grade-I constable, escorted the accused to the court.

Under the pretext of passing urine, Backiaraj suddenly pushed down constable Anthonysamy and took to his heels.

The accused also pushed aside a court staff while fleeing and runs into the police quarters situated close to the court complex. Backiaraj could not proceed further and was caught by public and brought to the court.

On a complaint from constable Anthonysamy, the Sessions Court police booked a fresh case against Backiaraj.

He was produced before the Judicial Magistrate Court-II in the evening.
