Motorists face trouble on Oyamari road at night

Absence of lighting along the Oyamari highway link road abutting the Cauvery, during night, is posing a serious problem to motorists. A drive along the one-kilometre stretch connecting Chennai bypass road is indeed a nightmarish experience for two-wheeler riders with the portion remaining pitch dark.

This has been the scene for over three months now ever since the Odathurai road over bridge connecting the Chinthamani area with the Chennai Bypass Road was thrown open to vehicular traffic in mid- February.

The problem is being acutely felt by motorists entering the stretch from the Chennai Bypass Road as well as for those proceeding towards Chennai Bypass Road from the Odathurai bridge.

While the Odathurai bridge remains well lit, it is total darkness beyond that on the Oyamari highway link road that connects the national highway.

Although the stretch has a long centre median so as to prevent head-on collision with provision of openings midway, the ride nevertheless remains unsafe in the absence of lighting facility.

With the stretch being completely dark, the glare from vehicles coming in the opposite direction virtually blanks out motorists.

The problem is compounded as many two-wheeler riders resort to wrong-wide driving in the stretch to reach the Chennai By Pass road posing great hazard to rule-abiding motorists proceeding towards Chinthamani.

Connecting the national highway from the city the Oyamari link road definitely needs proper lighting to ensure safety for all road users taking the stretch, feel public.

Having laid a good road, it is high time for the authorities concerned to provide lighting facility at the earliest, say motorists.

A senior Corporation official said lighting facility could not be provided as the model code of conduct for the just concluded assembly election was in vogue for over two months.

However, the official said now that the election was over steps would be initiated to install lights on the bridge.
