All through his camp in Pudukottai that lasted a few hours on Sunday morning, he could mobilise Rs. 2,700.
The amount was meagre but it would be utilised for a noble cause - to impart education to the orphans and the wards of economically weaker sections.
For 33-year-old S. Selvakumar, a Tamil lecturer of Sridevi Arts and Science College at Ponneri near Red Hills, the camp has been a regular weekend schedule. He chooses a town every weekend and polishes shoes and footwear of passersby.
He displays prominently behind him a board explaining the motto of the mission.
“Initially, between 2002 and 2004, I started working for the differently abled persons. I collected rehabilitative device and distributed them for their livelihood. Later, realising the importance of education for the needy children, I founded Mother Theresa Nursery and Primary School at Padiyanallur near Red Hills,” he says.
The school with strength of 170 children caters to the educational needs of orphans, children with single parents or children of destitute women.
The school is run by a team of eight teachers, including his wife, Malliga, who is the principal.
