The Tiruchi Corporation has decided to construct a modern wholesale fish market along the Kuzhumikarai Road in Anna Nagar and build new shops for retail fish traders at Puthur and Gandhi market in the city.
The wholesale section of the fish market currently functioning at Puthur market would be shifted to the new facility to overcome space constraints.
The corporation has planned to approach National Fisheries Development Board for technical guidance and also a financial grant for setting up the facilities.
An official resolution on the subject was approved at an urgent meeting of the corporation council chaired by Mayor A.Jaya on Thursday.
The fish market, part of Puthur market complex, is currently functioning in the congested locality of Renganathapuram area.
In the absence of adequate space for parking heavy and light vehicles loading and unloading fish at the market, they were being parked on a road abutting the southern side of the market, causing congestion.
With the locality being a residential area surrounded by hospitals, residents were facing hardships.
The civic body proposes to shift the wholesale section of the fish market to the new facility to be built at a piece of land owned by the corporation along the Kuzhumikarai Road.
The new market would have shops for wholesale traders, fish processing area and an effluent treatment plant.
New retail shops would be built at Puthur Fish Market and also at Gandhi Market in the city, replacing the existing ones.
The corporation will commission a consultant to design and prepare a project report.
The civic body hopes to get substantial grant from National Fisheries Development Board and meet the rest of the project cost from its general fund.
The council also approved a resolution requesting the Commissioner of Municipal Administration to identify a consultant to prepare the project reports and estimates for seven development projects.
The projects include construction of a commercial complex at Yanaikulam grounds near Singarathope in the city; construction of parking lots on old Chathram premises near Holy Cross College junction and Diamond Jubilee complex at Gandhi Market; construction of a modern goat slaughterhouse with an effluent treatment plant near Gandhi Market; new shops for mutton, fish and chicken traders at the market; establishment of six new English medium elementary schools; and to take up a study for the scientific closure of the accumulated garbage at the corporation’s garbage dump yard at Ariyamangalam.
Some of the councillors led by M.Anbazhagan of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and J.Srinivasan of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam pressed upon the authorities to shift the Ariyamangalam garbage dump to the corporation sewage farm at Panchapur. Mr.Anbazhagan demanded that the corporation immediately stop dumping garbage at Ariyamangalam as residents around the yard were facing health hazards on account of the pollution causing by the garbage dump.
