Mock drill tests response system at airport

A mock bomb threat contingency and building evacuation drill was carried out at the international airport here on Tuesday to test the efficacy of different agencies while responding to emergency situation.

All agencies connected with the airport such as Airports Authority of India, Central Industrial Security Force, Bomb Detection and Disposal squad (BDDS) of the City Police, Customs, Immigration, and various airlines were involved in the mock exercise that lasted nearly two hours in the evening.

Airport sources said the mock drill commenced after the receipt of a “bomb threat message” in an aircraft and in the building with all agencies sounded an alert thereafter.

The bomb threat assessment committee members immediately got together to decide on the evacuation measures from the airport building and the security-related steps to be taken.

The airline security officials conducted a mock search in the aircraft while the BDDS conducted checks in the building as part of the drill.

The exercise was carried out as per the airport security contingency plan. The objective of conducting the drill was to test the efficacy and preparedness of different agencies while responding to crisis situation and the responsibility of every agency, a senior official said.
