A total of 70 mobile units were set up in the district for administering polio drops to children in the age group of 0 to 5 years, said Vellamandi N. Natarajan, Minister for Tourism.
Speaking after inaugurating the second phase of Pulse Polio immunisation at Corporation Middle School in Srirangam on Sunday, he said that the volunteers and personnel of these mobile centres reached out to interior villages to administer the drops.
Special care was taken to administer the drops at tourist centres, including Mukkombu and pilgrim centres and noted places of worship across the district. As many as 1,692 centres -- 1,412 in rural areas and 280 in urban areas, were set up to administer the drops.
S. Valamarthi, Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, K. S. Palanisamy, District Collector, P. Kumar, MP were present.
An official release issued later said that as many as 2,69, 809 children were planned to be covered under the programme.
This includes 531 children in refugees camps and 1,75,112 children in rural areas and 94,166 in urban centres.
