Thirty nine women from the Tiruchi Muslim community received a financial assistance of Rs. 5,000 each for purchasing tailoring machines and grinders in a meeting organised by the Tamil Nadu Minorities Commission here on Thursday. Nine Ulemas were issued identity cards as well.
Bishop M. Prakash, the chairman of the committee, reviewed the consideration applications received through the Muslim Women Aid Society and the implementation of welfare schemes for minorities in the district.
Mr. Prakash said the State government was implementing various welfare measures for minorities, including providing financial support for those undertaking the Haj pilgrimage and travelling to Jerusalem.
T. Thiagarajan, District Revenue Officer, said 441 members had been enrolled in the Tamil Nadu Ulemas’ Welfare Board in the district. About 23,889 Christian and Muslim students have been provided with Rs. 3.92 crore worth of educational assistance so far.
Twenty-eight of women self-help groups from minority communities have been extended a credit of Rs. 84 lakh at 4 per cent interest through the Tamil Nadu Minorities Economic Development Corporation. This financial year, the corporation has planned to extend a credit of Rs. 3 crore in the district.
Justin Selvaraj, U. Sudhir Lodha and K. Kalamani, members of the board, and V.P. Thandapani, Corporation Commissioner, were also present at the meeting.
