The State government is striving to improve the lot of those involved in the textile industry by implementing a slew of programmes for their welfare.
They include increasing free power to handloom units 200 units from 100 units a month and 700 units from 500 units a month for the power looms.
“Unstinted support to private-public partnership in the form of textile parks and seeking additional Central assistance to the tune of Rs. 200 crore for upgrading the 18 Common Effluent Treatment Plants in Tirupur are some of the initiatives being taken,” Handloom and Textile Minister O.S. Manian said here on Sunday.
Speaking after inaugurating the National Handloom Week celebrations, Mr. Manian recalled that during her June 14 meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa sought the Centre’s support for the Tirupur effluent treatment project, additional funds to the tune of Rs. 1,200 crore under the Technology Upgradation Front, initiatives for the welfare of those involved in the textile and handlooms industry were some of the points raised in that meeting.
Mr. Manian said the State government was ever supportive of the initiatives of textile industry such as the planned textile park in Perambalur district over an area of 100 acres. The Minister also gave away weavers welfare measures to identified beneficiaries on the occasion.
Agriculture Minister R. Duraikannu, Thanjavur Collector A. Annadurai, Kumbakonam Sub-Collector Mandri Govinda Rao, Joint Director of Handlooms and Textiles M. Palanisamy, Assistant Director Balasubramanian and others participated.
