Commercial tax department officials should make extra efforts to check tax evasion on goods being transported to other States, said P.V. Ramana, Commercial Tax Minister, in Tiruchi on Monday.
Addressing officials of commercial tax department of eight districts in the central region, Mr. Ramana underlined the need for intensifying the check of trucks and goods carriers, particularly on the borders of the State to check evasion of commercial tax on inter-State consignments.
The Minister advised the officials to take steps to bring more number of traders within the ambit of commercial tax. To achieve this goal, officials should issue monthly demand notices to traders and ensure counselling for them for prompt remittance of commercial tax.
Mr. Ramana referred to the online facility introduced by the department for downloading a few forms needed for marketing inter-State goods.
He said that the State government had allotted Rs.1.75 crore for providing adequate infrastructure to the check posts across the State.
The revenue through commercial taxes stood at Rs.27,148 crore till October this year which was about 25 per cent over Rs.21,739 netted for the same period last year. The Minister reviewed the progress of various buildings under construction for housing the training centre in Tiruchi at an estimate of Rs.2.5 crore, and commercial tax offices at Srirangam, Lalgudi, Pudukottai and Nannilam at an estimate of Rs.5 crore. He advised the officials to expedite the process of land acquisition for constructing check posts at Tranquebar and Melavanchur. Sunil Paliwal, secretary to government, Commercial Taxes and Registration Department, K. Manivasan, Commissioner of Commercial Taxes, Jayashree Muralidharan, Collector, and A. Rajaraman and Murugaiah, both additional commissioners, were present.
Officials from Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam participated, and explained the achievements in their jurisdiction.
