The State government was taking all necessary steps to improve enrolment at primary level and improve the infrastructure of government schools, said K.A. Sengottaiyan, Minister for School Education, Sports and Youth Affairs, here on Saturday.

Inaugurating the State-level sports competitions for persons with disabilities, organised by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu at the Kongunadu College of Engineering and Technology near Thottiyam, Mr.Sengottaiyan said modern toilets would be built in all schools which do have not the facility. Steps were also being taken to teach yoga for school children.

For the first time, the date of announcement of the results of public examinations has been notified even while the exams were being held. This avoided needless anxiety among students, he said.

Listing out various measures taken by the government to support persons with disabilities, Mr. Sengottaiyan called upon them to participate in sports to display their talents. Over 3,000 persons with disabilities were participating in the State level sports competitions being held here after the completion of the district level contests. Cash rewards would be given to the first three prize winners in each category, he said.

Tourism Minister Vellamandi N.Natarajan said the government was also encouraging them to excel in sports by providing incentives and cash rewards.

S.Valarmathi, Minister for Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare, said Tamil Nadu was a pioneer in establishing a separate university for physical education and sports. Sports persons were also being sent abroad for coaching with government support, she said.

T. Rathinavel, MP, M. Selvaraj and R. Chandrasekar, MLAs, K.S. Palanisamy, Collector, and other officials were present.
