Over 2,000 differently abled children are expected to participate at the special medical camps being organised at the Block Resource Centres of the Education for All Scheme in Tiruchi.
The camps, which commenced on Monday, will be held till August 2. Collector Jayashree Muralidharan, who inaugurated the camp at the Government Syed Murtuza Higher Secondary School campus, said 2,833 differently abled children were identified through the camps last year. Of them, 165 children have undergone surgeries. Three hundred and eighty-five others were provided with assistive devices and 677 children issued national identity cards.
About 684 home-based differently abled children are being provided training through 74 special teachers and five physiotherapists. This apart, 500 children have been admitted to schools. About 190 differently abled children benefitted through the day care centres functioning at 10 panchayat unions. All the panchayat unions in the district have been provided with special education materials and training equipment for muscular dystrophy.
The camp on Monday attracted 334 children who were screened by a team of doctors. The identified children are given medical advice, assistive devices and recommended for surgery if necessary.
