The students’ wing of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) has urged the Centre to retrieve Katchatheevu from Sri Lanka.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at the party’s student wing meeting held here on Sunday.

MDMK general secretary Vaiko delivered a special address at the meeting attended by State-level deputy secretaries and district-level organisers.

Fishermen of Tamil Nadu were subjected to brutal attacks by the Sri Lankan Navy consequent to handing over of Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka in 1974 by the Central government. The only solution to avert attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen was to retrieve Katchatheevu, the resolution said urging the Centre to withdraw the agreements signed in 1974 and 1976.

Establishment of industrial estates at the taluk level in all the districts of the State to provide jobs for the unemployed youth and operation of students’ special buses during school and college hours were among other demands put forward at the meeting.
