Months after a mason allegedly murdered his wife in their house at Pettavaithailai and absconded leaving his four minor children in the lurch, a special police team apprehended him in Puducherry. Mobile phone call details helped the team nab E. Rajendran (42). He was arrested and remanded on Monday.
The crime was reported in October after Rajendran in an inebriated state allegedly banged his wife Kavitha’s head against the wall at Gandhipuram causing her death. The couple, who belonged to different communities, had four children - two girls and two boys - aged between 2 and 7 years.
A murder case was registered at Pettavaithalai police station and two teams were constituted to nab the accused. Moved by the plight of the four children, Tiruchi Police arranged a shelter for them in a home through Child Welfare Committee.
As part of their probe, the teams went to various places, including Kancheepuram, in search of the mason. Their search led them to Puducherry after they got the mobile number from which Rajendran had reportedly made the call to the house owner at Pettavaithalai recently. The team camped in Puducherry for nearly a week before apprehending him.
