A mason aged over 50 years was slapped with life sentence in a Tiruchi court on the charge of murdering his wife who had opposed his intimacy with another woman.
Father of two teenaged children, Kandan of Kamaraj Nagar near airport, had doused his wife Jayanthi with kerosene and set her afire on July 5, 2012, after he was admonished by Ponmalai All Women Police and advised to behave responsibly. Jayanthi died four days later. The case registered initially under ‘attempt to murder’ provision was subsequently altered to a murder case by inspector Vasantha.
In the dying declaration, Jayanthi had said Kandan had set her afire expressing disgust over the disgrace she had caused by exposing the affair he had with his helper Selvi and separating them.
Principal District and Sessions Judge P. Velmurugan pronounced the judgement and imposed a fine of Rs. 1,000 on the accused.
There was uniqueness in an All Women Police Station handling a murder case for the first time with agility in the district and filing a charge sheet on the accused in a matter of months, public prosecutor D. Asohan said.
