Amid scaled up security measures, the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary day in the district passed off peacefully with no untoward incidents on Friday.

The day was marked by demonstrations by Muslim organisations in the city urging that the Babri Masjid land in Ayodhya be handed over to Muslims and those involved in the demolition of the structure in 1992 be arrested.

The demonstrators wanted the SC to give judgment in the case quickly. Demonstrations were organised by the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam, Indian Thowheeth Jamaath, and Manithaneya Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam in different places in the city.

A section of Hindu Munnani members were arrested in the city, Thatheingarpet, Thuvarankurichi, and Puthanatham after they attempted to stage demonstrations demanding the construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya.
