Masi maham festival

As part of the Masi Maham festivities of the famous Sri Adikumbeswarar temple here, devotees took out a procession of 63 Nayanmars around the town on Sunday.

The 10-day Masi Maham festivities commenced in the temple with teh hoisting of the sacred flag on March 2 and the events would continue over the next week. Daily processions of deities are being taken out during the period.

On Sunday, the devotees took out a procession of the Pancha Murthys _ Swamy, Ambal, Ganapathy, Subramanyar and Chandikeswarar _ on silver palanquins. In the lead was the temple elephant Mangalam and Thirukudanthai Sivanadiyar Thirukkottam head Natarajan along with devotees rendered Thevaram, Thirumurai and the other hymns of the saivite saints.

The high points of the festival will be on March 10 when the famous temple chariot festival will be held followed by the Teerthavari at the Mahamaham tank the next day to mark the culmination of the rituals.
