Manmangalam taluk carved out of Karur

Manmangalam, 6th taluk in the district

May 16, 2013 03:48 pm | Updated 03:48 pm IST - KARUR:

Manmangalam has become the sixth taluk in Karur district with Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announcing the bifurcation of the existing Karur taluk on the floor of the Assembly on Wednesday. The effort of Transport Minister V. Senthil Balaji is writ large on the move that is expected to benefit the core region he represents in the Legislative Assembly.

Revenue Department sources told The Hindu that the State government welcomed initiatives to carve out new taluks for administrative convenience if the intended region met certain criteria that included population, area, and development needs. Based on them, moves were initiated in Karur district sometime back to identify potential taluks and Manmangalam scored over other contenders.

Karur district comprises of Karur, Kulithalai, Aravakurichi, Krishnarayapuram, and Kadavur taluks, with the last having been formed in the previous DMK regime. While there was a demand from certain quarters to bifurcate Aravakurichi taluk to form K. Paramathi taluk, the population was less than the required four lakh stipulation.
