The 84-bed Kamarajar Government District Headquarters Hospital started functioning from the new premises at Manapparai near here on Wednesday. M.R.K. Pannerselvam, State Health Minister, was the chief guest at the function held on Wednesday to mark the commencement of the functioning of the hospital from the new premises constructed at an outlay of Rs. 3.57 crore.

The new District HQ Hospital here was formally inaugurated by M.K. Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister, during October.

The new premise is located on the Manapparai - Pudukottai road, about one km from the town. The Hospital has exclusive wards for male, female and child patients besides a maternity ward. Separate entrances have been provided for the female wards and the general-cum-child units. Apart from the building, adequate infrastructure facility including incubator, CT scan, ultra scan and other accident and emergency-related equipment are being provided for the hospital in a phased manner.

The hospital will get additional infrastructure of both buildings and clinical equipment. Plans for providing additional buildings at an estimated cost of about Rs.3.5 crore are on the anvil. The buildings will be constructed in course of time, the Health Department sources said. The hospital will also get more clinical infrastructure including orthopaedic unit and surgery wing.

The existing hospital at Manapparai town, which has 66 beds, will also continue to function, the sources said.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Pannerselvam said that starting of the District Headquarters hospital would cater to the health care needs of the economically weaker sections. The State Government attached priority for the execution of the scheme at Manapparai by allotting funds.

The members of the public have been gaining confidence over the health care delivery schemes being implemented by the State Government. The growing number of institutional delivery at Government hospitals testified to this fact, he said.

Mr. Pannerselvam also inaugurated the ultra-scan equipment at the hospital.

Transport Minister K.N. Nehru said that he would notify a bus-stop for the District Headquarters hospital which is located at Bharathi Nagar on the outskirts of town.

Forest Minister N. Selvaraj, Collector T. Soundiah, Additional Director of Medical Services N. Raja and others were present on the occasion.
