The man who attempted to sexually assault a 5-year-old girl along the railway station road in Srirangam on Monday was remanded in custody on Tuesday.

On hearing the cries of the girl, the public thrashed the man and handed him over to the Srirangam all-women police. Police sources said the offender Balraj, a painter, was a bachelor, and had attempted to molest the girl under the influence of liquor. A senior official of the Srirangam all-women police said the accused was booked under non-bailable sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012. The child who was initially admitted to the Srirangam Government hospital was shifted to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial GH on Tuesday. The girl was in a stable condition and her statements have been recorded, police said.
