The Assistant Sessions Judge, I A.P. Balachandran, here convicted and sentenced a 47-year-old man to undergo seven-year imprisonment for setting a thatched shed afire destroying polythene tarpaulins and plastic materials used for making bricks within Uppiliapuram police station limits in December 2011.

Pronouncing the verdict on Saturday, the Judge imposed a fine of Rs.5,000 on N. Manoharan while awarding the sentence.

A police press release said Manoharan committed the crime owing to previous enmity with S. Srinivasan who runs a brick-kiln along the Erakudi–Thuraiyur road.

Both hail from Erakudi village within Uppiliapuram police station limits.

The release further said Manoharan set afire the thatched shed erected close to the brick kiln, belonging to Srinivasan, on the night of December 14, 2011 that destroyed 10 polythene tarpaulins and plastic materials used for making bricks - all worth Rs.1.5 lakh.

On a complaint from Srinivasan, Uppiliapuram police registered a case.
