Makkal Adhikaram members held

August 13, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:17 am IST - TIRUCHI:

Several members of the Makkal Adhikaram, an outfit, were arrested here on Friday after they staged a protest and attempted to hold a public meeting and cultural programme for which permission was denied by the city police.

The outfit had planned a public meeting in support of the striking advocates who had been boycotting courts condemning the recent amendments in rules.

It had issued notices regarding the public meeting at Puthur ‘four road’ junction for which the police had refused to accord permission. The outfit subsequently chose to hold it at Woraiyur which again was refused.

A large number of Makkal Adhikaram members led by its State coordinator Raju came in a procession to Woraiyur on Friday evening and staged a protest and attempted to hold the public meeting despite refusal of permission by the police.

Carrying placards the members raised slogans in support of the striking advocates and sat on the road for some time before they were held.

A heavy posse of police personnel were deployed at Woraiyur and other places. Police sources said over 650 members were arrested.
