As many as 29,141 cases were settled at the mega Lok Adalat held under the auspices of the District Legal Services Authority at the court campus in Tiruchi on Saturday.
A total of 1,013 motor vehicle cases were settled, while 2,661 non-performing assets (NPA) outstanding at various banks were settled. This apart, 321 civil cases were also settled at the adalat.
P. Velmurugan, Principal District and Sessions Judge and Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority was overseeing the progress of the adalat and enquiring with official from judiciary.
A team of 10 judges perused the details of the cases . A litigant-friendly approach was observed at all chambers, with the officials first ascertaining the economic status and monthly income of the individual, particularly while settling the NPA cases.
The orders for birth certificates were issued to 3,096 persons. This apart, 431 cases involving bouncing of cheques worth Rs, 18 lakh were also settled .
The adalat had gone down well with members of legal fraternity. Senior lawyers said that the adalat had come as a boon to the litigant N. Anbazhagan, secretary of the City Bar Association, said that the spot payment of compensation was an attraction for the litigant public, as it involved an expeditious and hassle-free settlement. S. Ramesh, an advocate for National Insurance Company, said that the adalat equally benefited the insurance companies which were relieved of interest.
