This Karthigai season, residents can choose from over 200 varieties of lamps to decorate their homes. Different models of lamps made of clay and brass as well as the famous Nachiarkoil lamps are on display at the Karthigai Deepam exhibition being held at the Poompuhar showroom in the city.
The price of the lamps ranges from Rs.100 to Rs.64,000.
The lamps available in various sizes are the handiwork of 150 artisans employed in government production centres at Madurai, Nachiarkoil, and Vagaikulam. Clay agal lamps made by artisans in Kancheepuram, Manamadurai, Madurai, Puducherry and Villupuram and West Bengal are also on display. In addition to the staple clay agal lamps which are a must for Karthigai Deepam, residents can also purchase a new variety of lamp called Veedum Vilakkum . This new addition to this year’s exhibition is made out of clay, resembles a house with lamps at the doorstep and considered a source of charm and delight, according to V.Ganesan, manager, Poompuhar.
Poompuhar also makes customised lamps based on orders within stipulated time.
The exhibition was inaugurated by Sundar Pattar, one of the priests of the Srirangam Sriranganathaswamy Temple, on Monday. The showroom is open on all days from 10 a.m to 8 p.m till November 16 except Sundays. Poompuhar expects a sale of Rs.4 lakh through this exhibition.
