A senior ENT specialist and paediatrician from the city, was among the recent recipients of the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ presented by the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University on occasion of its silver jubilee.
V. Kanagaraj (74), chairman, Dr. G. Viswanathan Specialty Hospitals, was felicitated for his community service nearing four decades.
He was part of the G. Viswanathan Hospitals since 1965 and later went on to hold the post of secretary in various institutes including cancer cure centre, GVN Institute of Oncology and Dr. G. Viswanathan School of Medical Science that comprises GVN School of Nursing, Kamala Viswanathan College of Physiotherapy and Dr. Sakunthala College of Nursing.
500 medical camps
The specialist, who has reportedly not collected consultation fees till date, has conducted more than 500 medical camps . The former president of the Indian Medical Association, Tiruchi branch, consults free of cost at various orphanages, old age homes and a slum in Srirangam. He is also a patron of the Dr.K.Shantha Breast Cancer Foundation, named after his gynaecologist wife and the Shanthallaya Hospice , a palliative care centre. The former aims at conservation of breast by early detection of breast cancer while the latter offers free medication and care for terminally ill patients. Mayilvahanan Natarajan, vice-chancellor, State medical varsity, presented the awards.
