The road would link the Pudukottai road near Mathur, 10 km away from the Tiruchi junction, and the Tiruchi-Madurai Highway at Panjapur.
Levelling of the bypass under construction by NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) to link Tiruchi-Thanjavur road with Tiruchi-Pudukottai and Madurai Highways from Asoor near Thuvakudi commenced on Thursday.
Earthmovers were deployed to carry out the works. The 10-metre two-lane road with paved shoulders to a length of 26 km would link the Tiruchi-Thanjavur road with Tiruchi-Pudukottai and Madurai highways. The road would link the Pudukottai road near Mathur, 10 km away from the Tiruchi junction, and the Tiruchi-Madurai Highway at Panjapur.
Being laid as part of the Tiruchi-Karaikudi two-lane project to a cumulative length of 108 km, the bypass road would serve as a semi ring road, easing traffic congestion in the city.
Official sources said the works were progressing as per the plan to complete the project by May 2013.
The Rs. 404-crore project executed by Transstroy Ltd-OJSC Consortium, an Indo-Russian joint venture, under Build, Operate, Transfer (annuity) scheme, entails construction of bypass roads at four other places: Keeranur, Pudukottai, Tirumayam, and Karaikudi.
The bypass road, enabling faster movement of materials between BHEL and ancillary industries at Mathur, would serve as a boon to the fabrication sector.
