A legal aid clinic to provide basic legal services and advice free of cost to public has been opened at the Srirangam taluk office premises.
Established by District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), the clinic will function every Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and help people by offering legal advice besides liaising with government offices and public authorities to aid the public approaching the clinic for solving their problems.
A paralegal volunteer trained in basic laws and a panel lawyer with skills for amicable settlement of disputes have been deputed to the clinic to assist the petitioners.
Inaugurating the clinic here on Friday, Justice M. Jaichandren, Judge, Madras High Court, said steps were being taken to establish the clinics at villages and unions for the benefit of the people. He called upon the public to make use of the clinic which would facilitate in getting their problems solved speedily. Observing that the clinic had been started with a view to helping the poor and the disadvantaged, Justice Jaichandren said paralegal volunteers had been trained to aid the public.
Principal District Judge and chairman, DLSA P. Velmurugan said plans were afoot to start clinics in all taluk offices, Block Development Officer offices, panchayat union offices, colleges and schools in the district.
Besides providing legal services, the clinics would also create awareness among public on aspects relating to law, he said.
District Revenue Officer T. Thiagarajan, Tiruchi Bar Association president A. Murugesan and advocate S.B.A. Rajeswari offered their felicitations. Four petitions were received on the inaugural day.
