In a daring robbery, the criminals locked up a mother and son in a room in their house at Dwarka Nagar near Siruganur and looted gold jewellery on Wednesday. After committing the crime, the robbers sped away in the car belonging to the complainant T.L. Kannan, a college lecturer.
Police sources said two criminals entered the house through the backdoor that was open after scaling the compound wall at around 8.30 a.m.
They at first threatened Mr. Kannan’s aged mother L. Jayam with sharp weapons when she spotted them at the rear of the house. They barged into the house, threatened Mr. Kannan, and locked the mother and son in a room.
After robbing the woman of a one sovereign gold chain, they opened the cupboard and took away 3.5 sovereigns of gold jewellery, including a necklace and a gold ring. They drove away in the car that was parked in front of the house.
The culprits later abandoned the car at P.K. Agaram along the Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway.
The vehicle was recovered later. The offence came to light after Mr. Kannan’s student visited his house sometime later.
Superintendent of Police S. Rajeswari, Deputy Superintendent of Police, and Lalgudi sub division Abdul Aziz visited the spot. Fingerprint experts inspected the spot and a tracker dog was pressed into service.
The police said the house located in an isolated area made it easier for the culprits to strike. The Siruganur police have registered a case.
