The State government has identified 10 acres of land and has also issued enter-upon permission to the Bharathidasan University Model College in Aranthangi for constructing a building on the site.

The site is located at Perunavalur in Aranthangi town and the university has already remitted Rs.8.25 lakh towards the land cost.

The college is presently accommodated partly at the Old Court Building on the Old Hospital Road in the town, and partly at the Government Polytechnic on Avudaiyarkovil Road.

According to university sources, the construction work of the building to be taken up at a cost of Rs.7.97 crore will commence soon.

The University Grants Commission, the Bharathidasan University, and the State government will contribute one-third of the cost each.

The college has been classified as a ‘Model College’ by virtue of its location amidst rural clusters.

The classification helps the college to be eligible for a special grant of about Rs. 2.65 crore – equal to one-third of the construction cost of the building.

Work is on

Similarly, building construction work of three colleges located in Vedaranyam, Tiruthuraipoondi, and Veppur too are in various stages.

While construction work at Olaipadi College near Veppur is in full swing, a piece of land has been identified for the Vedaranyam College, and the process of land transfer for Thiruthuraipoondi College is in progress, sources said.

While land has been identified for the constituent college at Peruvalanallur near Lalgudi, the process of transfer of land is in progress for other two constituent colleges in Nagapattinam and Nannilam, the source said.
