Come the Tamil month of Karthigai, it is time for celebrating festival of lamps-Karthigai deepam. People light ‘Agal Vilakkus’ made of clay by potters and wick lamps on the occassion.

Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation ltd here has organised a Karthigai deepam sales exhibition at its Poompuhar showroom on Gandhiji road for the festival.

Bronze and Panchaloka wick lamps produced at the Poompuhar’s lamp production unit at Nachiyarkoil, Agal vilakkus prepared by women Self Help Groups and other artisans, Moradabad lamps, Thirumalai deepams, Kanda deepams are on display in the exhibition. Agal Vilakus now come in various colours. Besides deepams, handicrafts from other states, textiles, leather goods, stone articles, panchaloka icons, paper and wooden dolls and sculptures are on display in the exhibition.

A sales target of Rs. three lakhs has been fixed for this Karthigai festival by the Poompuhar management. Price of articles range from Rs. 20, to Rs. 20,000. Ten per cent discount is also given. The exhibition is open for public from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. till November 30.
