A steel-type footbridge with ramp-way was inaugurated at Kumbakonam railway station on Friday by O.S.Manian, MP.

The bridge connecting west and east roads across railway lines has been constructed at a cost of Rs.1.10 crore of which Rs. 61.73 lakh was allocated from the MP's Local Area Development Fund.

The length of the ramp is 168 metres while the span of gangway is 22 metres.

Mr.Manian said though the country’s railway network was one of the best in the world, a lot of improvement in infrastructure was still needed.

The exclusive pedestrian overbridge will be of much use to the pedestrians.

The MP said that he has taken steps to stop Mannai express at Papanasam station and appealed to the southern railways to take up gauge conversion between Tiruvarur and Karaikudi via Thiruthuraipoondi.

Manjula Rangarajan, Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi, said the erection cost of the bridge was Rs.80 lakh. Taking into consideration the needs of the elderly and the women, ramps have been provided.

Height of the bridge has been decided taking into consideration future electrification requirements of railways. With respect to doubling of track between Tiruchi and Thanjavur, the DRM said that once the paper works are completed, work would be completed in 18 months.
