The Tiruchi District Rifle Club was inaugurated by State Transport Minister K.N. Nehru at a function held at the sprawling Railway Protection Force (RPF) Training Centre premises at Khajamalai here on Monday.
District Collector T. Soundiah is the President of the Rifle Club, which has five Vice Presidents, a Secretary, Joint Secretary, Treasurer and Executive Committee Members. District Revenue Officer V. Dakshinamurthy and Superintendent of Police, Tiruchi Rural A. Kaliyamurthy are among the Vice Presidents of the Rifle Club.
Those above the age of 12 can become a member of the club and get trained in shooting. The club will conduct training in shooting on the first and third Sundays of every month in rifle, air rifle and pistol from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the RPF Training Centre premises here.
Inaugurating the rifle club and shooting training, Mr. Nehru said efforts would be taken to make Tiruchi as a model district in the sports field. District Collector T. Soundiah said the State government had granted funds to the tune of Rs. 5 crore in the last two years alone for development of sports in the district.
A sum of Rs. 3.5 crore had been granted for establishment of an astro turf hockey field at the Anna Stadium, he said adding that the works would completed by April. Funds to the tune of Rs. 1.5 crore had been granted for works connected with the construction of multi-purpose indoor stadium at the Anna Stadium complex, Mr. Soundiah said.
