J. Venkataraman, acclaimed Carnatic vocalist, was honoured with the title, “Nadhadweepa Kalanidhi”, as part of the 15 anniversary celebrations of Nadhadweepam Trust and the 105 birthday celebrations of Semmangudi R.Srinivasa Iyer here on Wednesday.
S. Thyagarajan, managing trustee, Sathguru Sangeetha Sabha, presided over the function. S. Krishnakumar, general manager, Canara Bank Circle Office, Tiruchi, was the chief guest.
Mr. Thyagarajan, who delivered the presidential address, recollected the time when he had learnt music from Mr. Venkataraman and shared anecdotes about the great relationship the two shared.
Mr. Krishnakumar spoke about how music soothes the senses and added that Carnatic music helped in preserving culture and tradition.
Mr. Venkataraman was presented a gold coin and a purse. He delivered an emotional acceptance speech on receipt of the award. He was also honoured by his disciples.
K. Ramesh, managing trustee, Nadhadweepam Trust, and S. Gopalakrsihnan, Agasthiar Publications, were present at the event, which was enhanced by a melodious vocal concert.
Karaikudi M.S. Mani rendered the vocal concert aided by R. Muralidharan, violinist, A.Easwaran on the mirudangam, and S.Krishnasamy on the ghatam.
The five-day celebrations will feature vocal concerts every evening and conclude by honouring K.Vageesh with the title, ‘Nadhavidhya Bhoopathi’, on July 28 (Sunday).
