The City Police have put in place a one-side parking system along the Big Bazaar Street, a prime commercial area in the city, in an effort to ease congestion and ensure free vehicular movements. As per the plan parking of vehicles would be on one side of the stretch for the first 15 days in a month and on the other side for the remaining 15 days.

Police sources said the one-side parking system has been put in place recently in an effort to prevent congestion and ensure free flow of vehicles.

The Big Bazaar Street is one among the major commercial centres in the city starting from the Gandhi Market arch. The busy road is dotted with commercial establishments on both sides with a chunk of them being jewellery outlets.

The entire stretch is a congested with many shopkeepers having encroached on the existing road space making it difficult for motorists who have to manoeuvre to reach the other end leading to the NSB Road, say civic body officials.

Realising the day-to-day difficulties faced by motorists while passing through this stretch, the City Police and Corporation officials jointly embarked on a mission to drive home the message to shopkeepers along the stretch to come forward and remove encroachments on their own. A senior Corporation official said some shopkeepers had extended their establishment by nearly five feet thereby eating into the existing road space. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) along with Corporation officials had inspected the stretch recently asking shopkeepers to remove encroachment in front of their respective establishment on their own.

A meeting was convened by the civic body officials with the traders here a few days ago to reiterate the message that encroachments should be removed.

A corporation official said the civic body would soon remove encroachments along the stretch with assistance from the city police to ease congestion.
