At a time when women empowerment is yet to take full shape on many counts the Lok Sabha poll in Karur constituency provided an opportunity to demonstrate their prowess.
Except Election Observer Alok Awasthi, all other officials seated on the podium of the main counting hall at the counting centre in Kumarasamy Engineering College near here were women.
Led by Collector and Returning Officer S.Jayandhi, the senior officials of the district, including M.Aruna, District Revenue Officer, S.Anitha, Personal Assistant to the Collector (General), and S.Madhuranthagi and R.Baby, Deputy Collectors (training), were busy extracting work from their subordinates, most of them men. Each of them ensured the completion of their designated duty right from the opening of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) to the declaration of results.
Similarly, most of the officials, involved in counting votes polled in Viralimalai constituency happened to be women. Interestingly, they were chosen on randomisation basis.
“It is indeed a rare occasion, where many of the important positions are occupied by women in a district. “We didn’t experience any difficulty in getting the support of officials and others. The power of the position ultimately made the job easy,” said Ms.Jayandhi.
